The knee replacement process is a type of arthroplasty, the literal meaning of which is “the surgical repair of a particular joint”. In this procedure, degenerated joints are surgically reconstructed and replaced using human-made artificial parts or prosthetics. With a new knee joint, the patient will experience lesser or no pain and be able to move around in a few months quickly. Why is knee replacement surgery required? All about knee joint replacement

Knee joint replacement is a procedure to interchange the worn-out knee joint with an artificial, human-made knee replacement known as a prosthesis. In this surgery, the damaged knee cartilage and bone are taken out, and new synthetic pieces are placed inside the knee. The human-made prosthesis is mostly made up of metal alloys, polymers, and plastics and emulates the functions of a knee. As per the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS), the newly replaced knees can fit according to one’s needs and specifications. The knee replacement surgery typically takes about two hours, but the post-procedure recovery and rehabilitation could last a few months. The knee replacement procedure is also termed as knee arthroplasty. Knee joint replacements are quite a common surgery these days, and over 600,000 knee replacements are done every year in the United States. What is the purpose of a knee joint replacement? The most common reason for knee replacement surgery is the damage caused d...

Causes of Deterioration of the Knees An average personwalksabout 10,000 steps per day. So if you don’ttake care of your knees, there is a risk of injury and more significant damage. Chronic pain in the knees is usually caused when you lose the cartilage, and the bones in that area start rubbing together, resulting in stiffness and swelling. Also, if someone has arthritis, then it becomes more imperative to take care of their joints. Eyesight of a 71 year old Glaucoma Patient successfully preserved at Shalby Glaucoma Centre.

“MrPrem Kumar [name changed], a 70 years old gentleman from Mumbai, came to us in November, 2019. He was suffering from diabetes since the last 20 years. Unfortunately, about 10 years ago, he developed a complication in the eye due to diabetes, known as “Diabetic Retinopathy”. Gradually, he lost vision in his eyes. He went through several procedures but all possible efforts could not save the vision of his right eye. He was managing his life and routines with limited vision in the left eye. In April 2019, he encountered another problem. This time it was a problem that threatened the remaining vision in his left eye. He developed a disease – Glaucoma, in his left eye, which so far had supported his life, and slowly started losing vision again. The problem got aggravated so much so that it was difficult for him to move from lighted areas to dark rooms. In the evenings, his movements outside the house got severely impacted due to the bright headlights of vehicles. His daughter residing i...

What Is Hair Transplant Surgery?

Image
Also known by the name Hair Restoration Surgery, Hair Transplant Surgery is a surgical procedure through which hair can be restored on the bald parts of the scalp. Doctors transfer the hair from the donor to the recipient’s sites of the scalp. Some areas of the scalp are not prone to hair fall, for instance, the back portion of the head. Hence hair follicles are picked from these areas. The two main types of hair transplant surgeries are described (in brief) below. FUT or Follicular Unit Transplantation- The surgical procedure involves the stripping of an area of the scalp follicles and then dissecting them in to individual grafts. The naturally occurring hair groups may contain 1 to 4 hair strands, and these transplanted units are also called follicular units. FUE or Follicular Unit Extraction – In this kind of surgery, individual hair units are picked and transplanted. However, other procedures of the surgical process remain the same as FUT. When is hair transplant required? H...
